Dedication at the Harrison Smith Preserve. On May 2nd, the class of 2012 planted and dedicated an apple tree at the Harrison Smith Preserve in memory of the their friend and classmate Nick Parisot. Read more in an article from The Hour.
Harrison Smith Preserve Updates. Recently a field at the Harrison Smith Preserve was cleared as part of an invasive removal and field restoration project. See a report on the progress of this restoration project. Also, the trail that starts at the entrance at Keeler Ridge Road south and continues through the preserve and connects to Quarry Head Park has been cleared and is available for use by all.
Land Donation. The Land Trust has received a donation of a 3.8-acre parcel on DeForest Road from Frank J. Mercede of Stamford and his sister, Barbara A. Pierce of Weston. The property is dominated by a man-made pond and wetlands and includes one building lot and abuts other open space owned by the Trust and the Town. See more information here.
Tax Law Update. A new federal law gives fairer tax benefit for voluntary conservation agreements. Congress recently passed a law extending for two years, and improving, the tax benefits of protecting private land for many landowners (which had expired at the end of 2007). See more information here.
Schenck's Island Seeding. The restoration of Schenck's Island continues as the freshly seeded meadow has had a full growing season and has now been freshky cut for the Fall. Ongoing work efforts continue to remove invasives. The new seeding took place last December, see an article about this in the Wilton Villager.
Walk our properties with the Trustees. Periodically, we invite the community to join us on a walk of one of our major properties. These are great opportunities to see the properties with the people who provide stewardship for the properties and who know the history, topography and botany of the land. Please join us.
